License Conversion guide for SteelCentral™ AppInternals Console and Collector v9 to v10

As part of the migration from v9 to v10 software Riverbed is providing an automated license and entitlement conversion for actively maintained contracts that include the v9 AppInternals Xpert Collector (AIXCOL) part. Every actively maintained unit of AIXCOL will be converted to 2.5 units of the AppInternals Agent (AIA) part. The newly issued AIA licenses are covered under the terms of the maintenance contract currently in effect and will not incur additional cost. 

The automated license conversion is provided only for the AIXCOL part and NOT any other legacy parts/SKUs. The AIXCOL licenses will NOT be revoked and will remain supported until the effective general End of Support date for v9 parts or until the current maintenance contract expires, whichever event happens first.

The rest of this document describes how to obtain, install and manage the new AIA licenses.

License Unit Usage Rules

AppInternals licenses contain a fixed number of license units. Processes use license units as follows:

  • Every Java process (JVM) uses a license unit.
  • Every agent with one or more .NET processes uses a single license unit. Multiple .NET processes on the same agent consume only one unit.
  • Licensing affects only whether the analysis server retrieves transaction trace data from agents. It does not affect page-view data enabled through the Collect EUE Option. The analysis server itself is not licensed.
The following figure shows different combinations of Java and .NET processes running on an agent host and how many license units they use:

Obtaining and Installing a License Key for a v10 Analysis Server

The following steps assume you have installed the v10 Analysis Server.

Follow these steps:

1. Log in to the AppInternals interface and navigate to the Configure > Licensing screen.

Click the   icon to copy the Activation Request String. You use it in step 4.

2. Navigate to Licenses > OPNET Software Licenses.

3. Enter your Group ID and Serial Number from the e-mail message and click Search. Find the serial number in the search results. Click allocate nodes to a console:


4. The Enter Activation Request String window opens. In the Enter Activation Request String window, paste the Activation Request String from this screen and click Submit:

5. The Add Nodes to a Console window opens. In the Add Nodes to a Console window:

a. Supply the fully-qualified analysis server host name as the Console Name.
b. Specify the number of agents you want to license with this analysis server in the Add Nodes to this console field.
c. Click Confirm. This opens the Activation Key window and adds a row for the host name to the licenses list.

6. In the Activation Key window, copy the activation key. Paste it in the Paste the 'Activation Key' area in this screen:

7. Click Save.

Log out and back in to the AppInternals interface to activate the license. AppInternals checks license status only when users log in, so all users must log out and in to take advantage of a new license.

Verify License Status

This area shows details about the current license and how many license units are in use.

The details under the Usage graph show the distribution of consumed license units across JVMs and hosts that with at least one .NET process. The numbers are links that open the Process List Screen filtered to show the corresponding processes to instrument:

* x JVMs filters the processes to show those JVMs with collection enabled.
* y .NET Hosts filters the processes to show all .NET processes on hosts with at least one process with collection enabled.

License Status Messages and Meaning

AppInternals checks license status only when users log in. Here are possible license status messages:
Message Notes
Warning: Your free trial license will soon expire on <date>. Trial licenses provide full functionality up to 14 days after the first user logs in to AppInternals. With a trial license, this message appears 10 minutes after users log in. After 14 days, the trial license expires and the AppInternals interface will not display data.
Warning: this license will soon expire on <date>. When a valid (non-trial) license is within 30 days of expiring this message appears 10 minutes after users log in.
Warning: Your license has expired. This message appears after a license expires. Users can access all screens in the AppInternals interface, but see “no data” messages or errors where data should display. In addition, License is invalid messages appear on some screens.
Unable to determine license status. If AppInternals cannot determine the license state, it displays this message and the behavior is the same as with an expired license.
Exceeding license count limit of <n> An operation (such as enabling the Harvest option for a process) used more license units than are available. See Managing License Unit Usage for steps to release a license unit.
Invalid 'Activation Key’. Please verify that the entire key was correctly copied & pasted and is for this instance of AppInternals. The value in the Paste the 'Activation Key' area is invalid. Possible causes are:
  The activation key value copied from Riverbed support site was somehow corrupted (for examples, characters were removed or changed).
  The activation key does not correspond to the analysis server system (as identified by the Activation Request String in the Set License area). This can happen if the activation request string was incorrectly pasted in the Riverbed support site to generate the activation key.
Error saving license 'Activation Key'. The analysis server service that processes licenses is not running or not responding.

Moving from v9 Software to v10 and Above

AppInternals Xpert Collectors are not compatible with v10 Analysis Server, and it is not possible to upgrade a v9 Collector to a v10 Agent.
AppInternals Xpert Console and Transaction Trace Warehouse are not compatible with a v10 Analysis Server and it is not possible to upgrade from v9 Console and TTW to a v10 System.
Please review the v10 on how to setup a v10 Agent and Analysis Server. While you are in the process of transitioning from v9 to v10 it is possible to setup data replication to preserve historical transaction data from v9.
