How do I set up and use loanable licenses?

Riverbed offers the following upgrades from workgroup licensing: loanable and enterprise. These options are available for certain products only. Please contact your Riverbed sales account manager for more details.

Loanable licensing is an extension to standard workgroup licensing that allows you to temporarily borrow a license from a license file on one computer to a license file on another. For example, you might use this feature if you wanted to loan a license to your laptop so that you could take a business trip.If you have questions about whether loanable licenses are right for you, please contact your Riverbed sales account manager, or info@opnet.com. For more information on any of the features or procedures mentioned below, please read the OPNET documentation, volume Administrator Guide, Chapter License Server, section Operations, subsection Licensing Operations for Loanable Licenses.

ONE-TIME CONFIGURATION
=================================
1. Install loanable licenses on a computer. This computer is home base for the licenses, and is called the loaner (or provider). Loanable licenses will be marked with a special L symbol when you view them in the OPNET License Manager.
2. Make sure the loaner's license server is running in server mode, not standalone mode. To change server modes, reinstall the latest software component of OPNET.
3. The computer where you want to borrow licenses temporarily is called the loanee (or requestor). Unlike workgroup licensing, the loanee does NOT need to be on the same classful IP network as the loaner.
4. Make sure the loanee is configured to obtain licenses from its own local license server. The license server may be configured in either server mode or standalone mode, but must be different from the server acting as the loaner (or provider). To change server modes, reinstall the latest software component of OPNET.
5. Make sure the loanee's license_managed_servers preference includes the loaner's hostname or IP address. This allows the loanee to look for the loaner in order to borrow, extend, and return loanable licenses.
6. If the loanee's machine is configured to use DHCP, and you are trying to use the loaned out licenses on a different subnet, you will require to restart the license server from the License Manager so that the new IP is seen by the License Manager.

BORROWING A LICENSE
----------------------------
1. On the loanee computer, start the OPNET License Manager. Make sure that the local license server is running correctly.
2. Click on the + next to Other Servers on this IP Network. The list of license servers appears.
3. Find the loaner's hostname (or IP address) in the list, and click on the + next to it. The information and license file (closed folder icon) appears.
4. Click on the folder to open the loaner's license file.
5. Select the available loanable licenses that you wish to borrow. You can select multiple licenses by click-drag or by <control>+click.
6. Click on the Borrow License button and follow the on-screen instructions.
7. The licenses are transferred from the loaner to the loanee. They will be automatically returned at the end of the loan period.

EXTENDING THE LOAN PERIOD

1. Start the OPNET License Manager on the machine that has borrowed the licenses (loanee).
2. Open the loanee's license file in the license manager treeview and select the licenses which you want to extend. You can select multiple licenses by click-drag or by <control>+click.
3. Click on the Extend On-Loan Licenses button and follow the on-screen instructions. The loan duration is extended.

RETURNING ON-LOAN LICENSES

On-loan licenses are automatically returned at the end of the loan period. If you would like to return the licenses to the loaner earlier, then do the following:
1. Start the OPNET License Manager on the machine that has borrowed the licenses (loanee).
2. Open the loanee's license file in the treeview and select the licenses which you want to return. You can select multiple licenses by click-drag or by <control>+click.
3. Click on the Return On-Loan Licenses button. The licenses are returned to the loaner so that others may use or borrow them.

TROUBLESHOOTING
----------------------------
1. Can the loanee ping the loaner? Can the loaner ping the loanee? Make sure you are pinging the same name or IP address specified in the license_managed_servers preference.
2. Make sure the license_simple_loanable_enable preference is set to TRUE. It is TRUE by default.
3. If you are using release 10.0 or previous: When borrowing, extending, or returning loanable licenses, select on the license in the main license file folder. Do not select the licenses in the loanable licenses or on-loan licenses subfolders. In older OPNET releases, these subfolders are for display purposes only.
4. If you used loanable licenses in a previous release...Make sure that the following preferences are unset:license_broker_hostlicense_broker_portThese preferences were used in previous releases of OPNET but are no longer necessary in OPNET 9.0 and greater. It is also no longer necessary to run the License Broker or configure license broker file.Make sure that the following preference is either unset or set to FALSE:manage_loanable_licensesThis preference was used only in previous releases of OPNET but is no longer necessary in OPNET 9.0 and greater.
