Where can I obtain DTED maps for use with OPNET's Terrain Modeling Module?

Solution

OPNET Technologies does not supply any DTED terrain data with the OPNET installation. However, DTED Level 0 terrain data is freely available for download from the NIMA web site, http://www.nima.mil.Instructions to download data from the NIMA site:1. Go to <URL: http://geoengine.nima.mil > or <URL: http://164.214.2.59:80/geospatial/products/DTED/dted.html >2. In the lower-left frame, click Define AOI (Area of Interest)- this should be a small area to keep the download size reasonable. Try 30N 101W for the upper left and 29N 100W for the lower right. This will give you terrain data for a small area in Texas.3. Click the Go! button to refresh the map4. Click the Download/Order tab above the AOI frame.5. Click the Download button next to the row with DTED Level 0, Military Specification, Windows (or change to UNIX if that is you system).6. In the next page, click the Build file for download link. It will take a few seconds to prepare the download and once it is done you will see a filename that you can click to save to disk.7. Once it's downloaded, unzip it into a directory on your hard drive and you are ready to go!The downloaded maps are usually 1 X 1 degree area maps. If your area of interest is larger than that, you will need to use several such 1 X 1 degree maps. To do this:- Put all the 1 X 1 maps in a directory- Go to Topology --> Terrain --> specify Terrain Data Directory- Specify the directory which contains the 1 X 1 mapsOPNET will automatically import an integrated map. Please refer the TMM instructions as outlined in the TMM section of the documentation for more information on using the data with Modeler.
