How does RED work?

Solution

RED works as follows:a) Average Queue Size < Minimum Threshold - No discarding b) Minimum Threshold < Average Queue Size < Maximum Threshold - Packets are discarded at a probability that increases linearly until 1 / Mark Probability Denominator percentage w.r.t. the Average Queue Size. Probability is zero when the Average Queue Size is equal to Minimum Threshold and this probability increases while the Average Queue Size increases and reaches 1 / Mark Probability Denominator when the Average Queue Size is equal to Maximum Threshold.c) Maximum Threshold < Average Queue Size - All packets are discarded Note that Average Queue Size is not the actual queue size (depending on the attribute Exponential Weight Factor)
